Mike Shanks spends a day with top Northern guide Brian Russell on his local river, the Cusher, where he learns a bit about French nymphing techniques.
If you can cast a bit and have a rough idea about the type of flies you can expect to be hatching and bugs that should be active, why would you need a guide? The answer should be obvious enough and much the same whether you intend to fish a river or a large, daunting sheet of still water. A guide will get you to the right spot and advise on the most suitable technique for the conditions. If you have ever visited a new water only to waste most of the day floundering around doing the wrong things in the wrong places, trying to work it all out for yourself you will understand how frustrating and unrewarding that can be.
